Born into an Anglican home in rural Northamptonshire, England, Carey was largely self-taught in geography and European languages. William Carey was born on the 17th of August, in Paulerspury, Northamptonshire. He was the oldest of five children, to Edmund and Elizabeth Carey, who were weavers by trade. William was raised in the Church of England, when he was six, his father was appointed the parish clerk and village schoolmaster.

        I was privileged to retrace the steps of William Carey in India recently to do location scouting for a film on his life. I was amazed to find Carey's name still held in the highest esteem in India. At the Serampore train station there were statues of Ghandi and Carey.
